A world of learning

Welcome to Durham’s Institute of Medieval and Early Modern Studies (IMEMS) Learning Centre.

The IMEMS Learning Centre offers online courses designed to provide quality skills training in various aspects of Medieval and Early Modern Studies.

We currently offer 2-week intensive courses in Latin European Medieval Palaeography and Reading English Handwriting 1500-1700. These 2-week courses aim to provide students with the necessary skills to identify, read and contextualise Medieval scripts in Latin and Early Modern scripts in English.

We also offer flexible courses in manuscript studies, each providing a week’s worth of material which is designed to be completed at your own pace over the course of eight weeks. These 1-week courses are Manuscripts Up Close: An Introduction to Codicology, Working with Early Printed Books 1476-1700, Books of Devotion: Medieval Bibles and Books of Hours, and Working with Early Modern Church Court Records.
